“Trauma” describes the ongoing mind-body distress caused by highly stressful, scary, or upsetting experiences
feeling intense, overwhelming emotions that are hard to control or cope with
feeling worried, on-edge, tense, panicked, or afraid
feeling numb, disconnected, or distant from yourself, other people, or your surroundings
flashbacks (feeling like you’re re-living a traumatic experience), intrusive negative thoughts
sleep issues like insomnia or nightmares
avoiding people, places, or things that remind you of the painful experiences
physical pain and discomfort (like headaches, stomach problems, muscle tension, shakiness)
